NEOM, Saudi Arabia is a city currently under construction in the northeastern Tabouk Province of Saudi Arabia. Its name is a combination of the Greek prefix “neo” (“new”) and the initial “m” of the Arabic word for “future,” Mustaqbal. The site comprises a total area of 26,500 square kilometers, and is set east of Egypt, north of the Red Sea, and south of Jordan. Its development in this specialized zone spanning three countries aims to make it independent of Saudi Arabia’s governmental framework in regards to taxation, labor laws, customs, and other business-related legal parameters, in order to offer its industries the ability to manufacture and provide services and goods at globally competitive prices. The first section of NEOM should be completed by 2025, with an estimated budget of $500 billion. The initiative emerged from Saudi Vision 2030, a strategic framework aiming to reduce Saudi Arabia’s dependence on the oil industry, diversify the country’s economy, and develop strong public service sectors, including education, health, infrastructure, and tourism. NEOM will be a city fully powered by renewable energy coming from natural sources such as wind and solar power. Many public service sectors – such as security, logistics, home delivery, or even caring for the elderly and the infirm – will be largely automatized, with state-of-the art robots performing a variety of functions. The city will contain many green walking areas, in order to encourage healthier lifestyles, and will be a major hub for innovation, hoping to attract emergent and established global businesses to research, build, and commercialize groundbreaking technologies to accelerate human progress.

Conferences about NEOM

Although NEOM is still under construction and does not yet host conferences or conventions, major events about the city have already started to emerge around the world. For instance, in December 2021, the Discover NEOM event in London included panels, presentations, and an exhibition of NEOM in film and photographs, aiming to pave the way to direct meetings with the project’s CEO and industry leaders. Moreover, sporting events such as the Extreme E Season 2 opener, an off-road racing contest with drivers using electric SUVs through the deserts surrounding the city, or the “Rise 100” challenge, a rock-climbing event, have already started to take place in NEOM’s surroundings, attracting a large number of competitors and spectators.

NEOM Attractions for Convention Attendees

NEOM aims to be a major tourist attraction, offering its visitors a large variety of both human-made and natural destinations. Although the city is still in construction, visitors can already enjoy a number of wonderful attractions, including: the Islands of NEOM, some of the most picturesque and pristine islands in the Red Sea; the Wadi Tayyb-Esm canyon, weaving its way through 400-meter-tall towers of granite, basalt, and sandstone, before plunging into the Gulf of Aqaba; the Midian Tombs – the last remnants of the ancient land of Midian, dating back to the 12^th century; the majestic mountain Jabal Al-Lawz, towering over 2,500 meters above sea level; and a variety of amazing beaches (such as the Gayal Beach or the Haddah Beach), home to kaleidoscopic-colored coral reefs and a diversity of marine wildlife.
