Nassau is the capital and largest city of the Commonwealth of Bahamas, with a population of over 270,000. Founded in 1650 by the British, Nassau is located on the island of New Providence, an important commercial centre and business district. Its strategic location at the intersection of various trade routes made Nassau a popular pirates' den in the 17th and early 18th century, continuously challenging British rule. However, by 1720 the pirates had been driven out by the British. Nowadays, the city is Bahamas’ administrative and financial hub and a major tourist destination, attracting annually millions of tourists.
