The Challenge
Securitas Technology's 12th Annual Security Symposium was not a standard corporate conference. The room contained Chief Security Officers and CEOs from over 100 Fortune 500 organisations — including Amazon, Microsoft, Bank of America, and Google. These were professionals who live at the intersection of AI-powered attack and AI-powered defence. They had seen every AI keynote trend come and go, and they could spot a generic one from the opening slide.
The challenge was twofold. First: to deliver genuine intellectual value to an audience this sophisticated — content that moved beyond surface-level AI enthusiasm to practical, board-ready frameworks they could act on immediately. Second: to do it in a way that positioned Securitas not as a vendor pitching solutions, but as a trusted strategic partner in the room. Any hint of product promotion would undermine both goals.
Beneath the content brief lay a deeper tension. Every security leader in the room was navigating the same paradox: AI was simultaneously powering the attacks their clients were defending against and the tools they were deploying to defend. The question facing every leader was not whether to adopt AI, but how to lead their people through that adoption without losing the human capability that made their organisations resilient.
What is Pilot Purgatory in AI adoption?
Pilot Purgatory describes the state in which 74% of companies are stuck — running AI pilots that never scale into enterprise-wide value. Organisations launch proof-of-concept projects, generate early results, then fail to move beyond the pilot phase due to cultural resistance, unclear ownership, and the absence of board-level frameworks for AI leadership. For security organisations, where the cost of failed adoption is measured in vulnerability exposure, escaping Pilot Purgatory is not a technology problem — it is a leadership one.
Bespoke by Design
Most AI keynotes start with a slide deck and swap in the client logo. James's process starts with the audience — who they are, what they already know, and what they're afraid to say out loud.
For Securitas Technology's symposium, that meant building an entirely new session from the ground up for a security leadership audience. Not adapted from a previous keynote — built specifically for the intelligence backbone of Fortune 500 organisations.
Learn about the Taylor-Made Process →Deep mapping of AI's dual role in security: as the tool powering attacks (deepfakes, AI-augmented fraud factories, autonomous threat agents) and the tool powering defence (AI-driven threat intelligence, digital twins, predictive response systems).
Profiling 100+ Fortune 500 CSOs and CEOs — their AI maturity, organisational priorities, and the specific cultural barriers preventing adoption in high-stakes professional environments.
Every example chosen for a security leadership context: KK Park's AI-augmented fraud factory in Myanmar; Arup's $25M deepfake CFO attack; Singapore's 5G Integrated Command Centre using AI and digital twins for national infrastructure; and Anthropic's Mythos model assessed as too dangerous for public release.
The session opened with James's brother-in-law Robert — a member of the SAS Signals unit killed in combat — reframing the audience not as technology buyers, but as the intelligence backbone of their organisations.
The Delivery
The 60-minute session followed James's 4P Framework — Position, Problem, Possibilities, Proposal — moving the audience from urgency to action. Three signature frameworks gave the room both language and data:
Why 74% of companies fail to scale AI value — and the board-level leadership moves that break the cycle.
The hidden cultural cost of low AI adoption, worth 2.5–14% of annual profit; particularly acute in high-reputation professional environments where being seen to use AI feels like admitting inadequacy.
High-performance human-machine collaboration drawn from Harvard and BCG research — giving security leaders practical vocabulary for how their teams work alongside AI.
The circular table format was put to full use in the Curious Questions exercise — MIT Professor Hal Gregersen's Question Bursts technique. Each table surfaced a real organisational AI challenge and collaboratively generated divergent questions to unlock new thinking. A keynote audience was converted into active, collaborative problem-solvers, generating live, table-level conversations on the AI challenges their organisations actually faced.
The session closed on James's Highland mountain metaphor: the higher summit of full human-machine creative potential had been invisible from base camp — until now.
