Manama is the capital city of Bahrain, an island nation in the Arabian Gulf. It has been a major hub of trading routes since antiquity and is home to a very diverse, multi-national population of 157,000. Due to its thriving oil industry, Manama experienced a fast growth during the 1990s and later on other industries developed, helping to transform this capital into an important financial hub in the Middle East. Nowadays, Manama’s main industry is represented by financial services, with more than 200 financial institutions and banks located in and around the city. The retail sector, represented in a diversity of shopping malls, also plays a fundamental role in Manama’s economy. The center of the city is dominated by traders and small workshops and the city’s fantastic old style market, Bab el-Bahrain Souq, offers a large variety of products, from colorful hand-woven fabrics to spices and pearls. Manama is also famous for the Bahrain National Museum, home to artifacts from the ancient Dilmun civilization. In contrast to many other Middle Eastern countries, Bahrain is rather liberal: women have been accorded the right to vote in 2002 and alcohol is also legal in the country, making Manama famous for its night-life too, with its multitude of bars and nightclubs spread around the city.
