GENERAL INFORMATION

General Information about Antwerp for Meeting Planners and Event Professionals

Antwerp is the capital city of the Antwerp province located in Northern Belgium. It has a population of approximately half a million inhabitants, which makes it the most populous city proper in Belgium. Renowned for its large port on the River Scheldt (the second largest European port), Antwerp has been an important commercial and cultural centre since the Middle Ages. Historically, trading has contributed the most to Antwerp’s economy, with a large number of merchants from both Europe and Asia traveling there for selling and buying their goods since the 15th century. The city is especially famous for diamond trading and is often considered the ‘world's leading diamond city,’ with 70% of the world’s rough diamonds commercialized in its medieval Diamond District. Other important financial sectors are electricity generation industry and oil industry, with companies such as Gunvor Petroleum, Stork and Exxon headquartered there. Due to its long and culturally rich past, Antwerp is home to many interesting historical buildings from different architectural periods, such as the Antwerp City Hall, built in 1565 in a Renaissance style or the Cathedral of Our Lady, built between the 14th and the 16th century and housing four amazing paintings by Rubens. The city is also home to many museums and art galleries, including the Rubens House, the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom), and the Red Star Line Museum.
