Rotterdam is an important port city from South Holland, with more than 600,000 inhabitants (the 2nd most populous city in Holland, after Amsterdam). It houses the largest port from Europe and the fourth largest one in the world. Rotterdam is a major commercial, financial and economic centre and hosts the regional headquarters of many well-known international companies, such as Maersk, Unilever, Procter and Gamble, Allianz, Pfizer and Petrobas. The city was largely destroyed during the Second World War and afterwards rebuilt, currently featuring a modern architectural landscape, represented by skyscrapers like Erasmusbrug, a 790 metres-high tower, and the New Orleans Tower (158 metres), as well as modernist constructions such as the famous Van Nelle Factory, voted by UNESCO a World Heritage Site. Other important landmarks include the City Hall, built in 1914 in an Art Deco style, the Rotterdam Zoo, a large zoological garden established in 1857, the St. Lawrence Church, a late-Gothic church built in 1449, and a large number of excellent museums, including the Bojimans van Beuningen Museum, the Kunsthal, the New Institute, the Dutch Photography Museum, the Maritime Museum, and the Museum of Chess-Pieces. Rotterdam is also a major education and research centre, particularly famous for its top level university Erasmus University Rotterdam.
