Valletta is the capital of the island of Malta and was founded 1566. It is world-famous for its 16th century architectural heritage built by the Knights Hospitaller, a medieval/early modern Catholic military order. In 1980, the city was designated by UNESCO a World Heritage Site and is currently a major tourist destination. Its architecture is mainly Baroque, but also features Neo-Classical, Mannerist and Modern buildings. Valletta is Malta’s commercial and administrative centre, housing the Parliament of Malta, the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Offices and several other governmental departments.
