GENERAL INFORMATION

General Information about Tampa, Florida for Meeting Planners and Event Professionals:

Located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, Tampa is the seat of the Hillsborough County and the largest city in the Tampa Bay area. It is currently the 3rd most populated city in Florida, after Miami and Jacksonville. In the 19th century, Tampa served as a military center and was world-famous for its cigars industry. Nowadays, the city’s economy is mainly driven by tourism, health care, finance, technology, construction, insurance, and the maritime industry. Tampa displays a wide variety of architectural styles, with high post-modern buildings such as the newly renovated Tampa Art Museum, and examples of Art-Deco architecture, like the Tampa Theater and the City Hall building. Some of its most important landmarks include the impressive Sulphur Springs Water Tower (built in 1920), the Bayshore Boulevard, with its six-miles-long sidewalk on the eastern end (the longest in the world), and the Mediterranean Revival Style buildings located on the Davis Islands. Since the 2000s, Tampa has witnessed an upsurge in consumer products, indicating that increasingly more wealth is concentrated in the area. Many large corporations have regional offices in Tampa, including banks and telecommunication companies, such as the Suncoast Credit Union (the largest credit union in Florida). Furthermore, Tampa is home to several Global Fortune 100 companies, including WellCare, Bloomin’ Brands, TECO Energy, and Raymond James Financial. The city is also famous for its numerous shopping areas, such as International Plaza and Bay Street, the SoHo district, WestShore Plaza, and Hyde Park Village, alongside many beaches and over 165 parks.

The City as a Conference Destination:

Tampa hosts more than 100 conferences each year, on topics ranging from visual arts and music to finance. The Tampa Bay Comic Convention is the city’s largest comic book convention, featuring exhibitors with a wide-spectrum of interests including comic books, magazines, toys, games, anime, manga, cosplay, artwork, sketches, and apparel. Another more specialized event is Metrocon, a three-day convention held in either June or July that focuses on anime art. Since 2015, the city has hosted the Tampa Riverfest, a festival dedicated to musicians and local restaurants. The Annual Leadership Dinner, a fundraising initiative promoting the business programs at Florida College, has been held annually at the Tampa Convention Center since 2008.

Tampa Food Options for Conference Delegates

Tampa offers a large variety of restaurants providing an impressive mix of national and international cuisines. If you are interested in experiencing the city’s native cuisine, with barbacoa grilling and house-brewed beer, you can try the rustic-chic Ulele restaurant on Highland Ave (+1 813-999-4952). However, if you plan to sample food from other countries, you could choose places such as La Terrazza, a local mainstay serving homestyle Northern Italian cuisine and wines in a warm-hued storefront space (+1 813-248-1326), or Yeoman’s Cask and Lion, with its British-style pub cuisine, microbrews, and cocktails (+1 415-440-5446). Mexican cuisine also has important representatives here: you can enjoy an upbeat Mexican menu for brunch, lunch or dinner in modern hangout spaces such as Green Lemon (+1 813-868-5463) or Miguel’s Mexican Seafood & Grill (+1 813-876-2587).

Tampa Attractions for Convention Attendees

There are a number of highly rated tourist attractions to visit after your business conference in Tampa. Downtown, you can find the Tampa Museum of Art, with rich exhibitions of modern and contemporary art, as well as Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities, or the Museum of Science and Industry, displaying dinosaur fossils, and incorporating the BioWorks Butterfly Garden (a butterfly exhibition that focuses on butterflies native to West Central Florida). If you are daring to have a bit more fun, consider visiting the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, a 335-acre African-centered animal theme park with amazing roller coasters and the second biggest SeaWorld park after SeaWorld Orlando. Another well-known attraction is the famous Florida Aquarium, a large scale facility hosting more than 7,000 aquatic plants and animals from Florida and other parts of the world.
